Soft Tissue Therapy

Management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments.

What is Soft Tissue Therapy?

Soft Tissue Therapy is the management, manipulationand rehabilitation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. Not only is it applicable to those people who participate in sport and exercise, but also to those aiming to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury.

The goal of Soft Tissue Therapy is to treat musculoskeletal pain, injury or movement dysfunction caused by life’s inevitable ups and downs. This is achieved with the use of a range of advanced soft tissue techniques including Deep Tissue Massage, Muscle Energy Techniques, Neuromuscular Techniques (trigger point therapy), Soft Tissue Release, Sports Massage, Connective Tissue Massage (fascial release) and Positional Release.

Aches, pains and injuries are a part of life that can affect us all, whether brought on by sport and exercise or by occupational stresses from both physically demanding or sedentary jobs. Soft tissue treatment considers all of this and provides a treatment plan to address both the cause and the symptoms.

Sport Massage

Despite it’s name, sports massage isn’t just intended for athletes and sports enthusiasts. Sports massage aims to increase blood flow by using free-flowing movements, flush the muscles, and loosen tight or injured parts of the body. For the athletes and sports enthusiasts, a pre-game sports massage will flush muscles, and help the tissues to warm up in order to supply optimal blood flow for performance. A similar technique is used post-game, whereby, the toxins are removed from the muscles. Any dysfunctional issues within the muscles or connective tissues can be tackled with a sports massage, looking to both the cause and the symptom. The approach enables some relief in the areas of pain or discomfort by releasing muscle tissue and tension, as well as tackling the trigger points and surrounding areas of restriction that might be hindering the particular area of pain in order to re-balance your bio-mechanics. All in all, sports massage is beneficial for the following:

Athletes and sports people
Injured individuals
 Injury avoidance / preventative measures
 Post-injured individuals
People who prefer a stronger massage
Circulatory issues

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is a therapeutic form of massage that aims to relieve muscle tension and treat chronic pain. This form of massage is good for anybody, including those with medical conditions, given its therapeutic and calming nature. Depending on your goals and desired outcome, remedial massage can employ various techniques to help deliver. While often remedial massage can be mostly relaxing and therapeutic, your massage therapist will sometimes hold pressure points that might cause discomfort. This is different to sports massage where sports massage can cause discomfort for much longer periods of time. All in all, remedial massage is beneficial for the following:

Long term and chronic conditions or illnesses
Relaxation, stress relief and sleep improvement
Depression and anxiety
Tense and tight muscles
Individuals with medical conditions

Thai style Massage

Table Thai Massage blends the unique compression and stretching poses of Traditional Thai Massage with the added benefits of Deep Tissue and Swedish techniques. The session is a dynamic experience where the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints receive the benefit of movement and massage. The benefits of Thai Table Massage include helping to:

Stimulate the nervous system
Relieves pain and muscle tension
Strengthen and rejuvenate the body
Improve circulation of blood and lymph
Increases flexibility
Enhance elimination of wastes and toxins from physical, mental and emotional strain
Relieve headaches/migraines
Relieve back pain and sciatica

Hot stone massage

Hot stone therapy combines traditional massage with the use of smooth, heated basalt stones, which are applied to the body as an extension of the therapists hands. The warmth of these heated stones penetrates muscles and balances the nervous system like no other treatment.

What should I expect from my treatment?

The premise behind hot stone massage therapy is that the direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing access to the deeper muscle layers. Combining hot stone protocols with a full body massage provides a very healing and effective experience. The hot stones also expand blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout the body. The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation. The warmed stones will be gently placed onto your body to help rebalance your energy and provide physical and mental therapy. The stones can also be used to mark places identified for localised trigger-point treatment. Benefits include:

Deeper relaxation than traditional massage
Toxin removal
Increases range of motion
Calms the nervous system
Increases rate and flow of blood circulation
Provides relaxation, decongestion and detoxification
Accelerates lymph drainage

Myofascial cupping (RockPods)

Myofascial cupping can help to reduce pain, promote healing and improve movement of the musculoskeletal system. Myofascial cupping (RockPods) are silicone suction cups which are applied to the skin. The myofascial cups work by decompressing the layers under the skin and by providing sensory input into the brain from the skin. This decompression and sensory input help to promote healing, to reduce pain and to improve movement of the musculoskeletal system. The myofascial cups are often used with movement to get the best therapeutic effect. Myofascial cups can be used as part of any treatment to get a positive result at no extra charge.

RockBlades

RockBlades are a form of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASTM). This is a technique that has been around for thousands of years where tools such as spoons or coins were used to scrape the body’s soft tissue. Rockblades were developed by RockTape – a well-known company that produce kinesiology tape worn by many athletes. They are used as part of a treatment plan, alongside massage therapy applied by hands. The tools (Mallet, Mullet and the Mohawk) comprise of a variety of different edges and shapes, which can be used to scan soft tissues for any areas of alteration in the soft tissue. The tool offers a very different form of tissue mobilisation to using the hands and can be extremely light and gentle in painful areas, or areas requiring injury rehabilitation. The application of these tools can:

Help improve muscle function
Help improve performance
Help to eliminate pain

Taping

Taping, (AKA – k-tape / Kinesio tape / Kinesiology tape / sports tape / athletic tape / rock tape) at one point, was believed to be only beneficial for professional athletes. Taping is used to:

Activate a muscle
Deactivate a muscle
Reduce swelling
Add compression to an area if discomfort

Research now shows that everyone can reap the benefits of taping as part of their treatment. Taping after treatments help improve kinesthetic awareness of posture and alignment. Designed to support muscles and joints and support in lymph flow and blood circulation of swelling. Water resistant and sweat resistant. The end of a treatment may include taping no extra cost.

There is no standard treatment as everyone if different. I mix and match all techniques and tailor treatment to the client’s needs. If you are still finding it difficult to decide which massage is right for you, get in touch with me by phone or email to discuss the problem and I can recommend which treatment is best.
